I’m so glad you’re here! Preparing for your maternity session is such a meaningful step, and I want you to feel fully supported as we get ready for your portraits.
This guide was created to help you feel confident, inspired, and ready. Inside, you’ll find practical tips on what to wear and styling inspiration for you and your family.
There’s still more. is just the light stuff. I have an in-depth exclusive client guide ready for you when you book a maternity session with me.
BOOK NOWThe aesthetic I aim for in every maternity session blends elegance with authenticity. I want your gallery to feel like a true reflection of you, and what you wear plays a big role n that.
The look we’re creating is cohesive, personal, and enduring. The styling choices you make — from color palettes to fabrics — are what help tie all of those moments together. Every detail supports the story of your motherhood journey, and my role is to elevate it in a way that feels like art while still feeling like you.
Color is one of the most important styling elements. For maternity sessions, I recommend neutrals and muted tones because they photograph beautifully in both outdoor and in-home settings. Creams, ivory, taupe, sage, and dusty blush are universally flattering and work across different environments.
Also consider undertones. If your skin has warm undertones, sandy beige, cream, and muted greens will enhance your natural glow. Cooler undertones pair beautifully with ivory, blush, and dusty mauve.
MORE ON COLOR ANALYSISWhen choosing what to wear, think about how you want to feel during your session. If you want something romantic and ethereal, a chiffon gown that moves with the air is perfect. If you want something modern and understated, a fitted knit dress will give you clean, timeless lines. Many clients bring two outfits so we can capture both looks in one session.
Comfort is just as important as style. If you feel restricted, itchy, or self-conscious in your outfit, it will show in the images. Look for pieces that allow you to move, sit naturally.
Light, flowing fabrics like chiffon or silk create movement and softness outdoors, while cozy textures like cotton, linen, or jersey feel warm and relaxed in an in-home setting. Lace can add a touch of romance, and layered fabrics can bring dimension to your look.
Stiff or overly shiny fabrics often create harsh lines or distracting reflections. Sequins, stiff polyester blends, or heavy satins don’t move gracefully and can feel out of place in both outdoor and in-home environments. Instead, look for fabrics that drape naturally and complement your body’s curves.
Outfits should flow together in tone and style, without looking identical. Start with your outfit as the anchor, and build the rest of the family’s wardrobe around it. Each outfit should have its own personality, but together they create a cohesive, elevated look.
Think of your family’s wardrobe as a color story rather than a uniform. When each person wears something unique but complementary, the final gallery feels balanced and timeless.
Partner outfits are usually the simplest. Solid colors in muted, neutral tones photograph beautifully. A linen shirt, or a soft button-down paired with chinos or clean jeans works in all settings. A casual jacket, cardigan, or rolled sleeves can create variety without looking overdone.
For children, simple, soft fabrics and neutral colors always work best. Think muslin rompers, cotton dresses, linen overalls, or knit sweaters. Avoid logos, cartoon characters, neon colors, or bold prints. These elements can feel jarring. And remember that comfort is key!
Booking with me gets you access to my curated client closet.
For expecting mothers, I’ve hand-selected gowns and dresses in neutral, muted tones that flatter a variety of body types and highlight your bump in the best way. Each piece was chosen to bring texture, movement, and elegance to your session.
For little ones size 3T and smaller, my closet includes cozy, neutral pieces for babies and toddlers. Think soft muslin rompers, linen overalls, and simple cotton dresses in shades like cream, dusty rose, muted sage, and oatmeal.
