When families reach out to me, one of the first questions I hear is: “Should we do a studio session or a lifestyle session?”
It’s a great question, because both are beautiful, but they’re also very different experiences. The good news is, there’s no “wrong” choice. It’s about what feels right for your baby, your family, and the memories you want to hold onto.
Think of it this way: studio photography is about creating timeless, classic images in a controlled space. Lifestyle photography is about capturing connection and story in your own home. Both tell the story of your baby, just in different ways.
So how do you decide? Let’s walk through what each session looks like, what makes them unique, and how to know which one is right for you.
Studio sessions take place in my professional photography space, that I set up specifically for the comfort of babies. Everything from the lighting, to the temperature is set up to keep your little one comfortable and safe.
In my studio newborn sessions, the focus is entirely on your baby. They’re swaddled, gently posed, and photographed against simple backdrops or with soft, timeless props. The result is clean, classic images that highlight every detail.
Studio photography is about precision and control. The light is always perfect, the environment is calm, and the images are polished.
Lifestyle sessions take place in your home. Instead of backdrops and studio props, we use your environment — the nursery you decorated, the couch you’ve spent sleepless nights on, the bed where your baby snuggles next to you.
With lifestyle newborn sessions, the focus is on connection. You holding your baby by the window. Siblings peeking into the crib. The dog sniffing their tiny toes. The photos feel natural, cozy, and deeply personal.
Lifestyle photography is less about poses and more about storytelling. It’s about documenting what life looks like in those early days.
Here’s what a studio session feels like:
You walk into a calm, warm space where everything is ready. There’s no need to tidy your house or worry about lighting. I guide the entire process from soothing your baby to carefully swaddling them.
For newborn sessions, the room is kept warm, white noise is played, and your baby often drifts into the kind of deep sleep that makes posing possible.
Parents often tell me that studio sessions feel like a relief because it takes out the work for them. They simply have to show up and the rest is taken care of.
The final images? Clean, timeless, and polished. The kind of photos that look beautiful framed on the wall or in a keepsake album.
A lifestyle session feels completely different.
Unlike a studio session, I come to you in your home. You don’t have to pack up the diaper bag, juggle nap schedules, or worry about traffic. Your baby stays in their own environment, surrounded by familiar smells and sounds.
The photos are less posed and more organic. Your baby swaddled in their crib. You rocking them in the nursery chair. Siblings piling onto the bed for a snuggle. Pets making quick cameos before heading out of the room.
Parents often tell me that lifestyle sessions feel more personal. The photos show not just their baby, but the story of their family.
The final images? Cozy, natural, and authentic. The kind of photos that feel like looking back on a memory, not just a moment.

Every family is different, which is why both options exist. Here’s a breakdown:
Studio Photography
✅ Controlled lighting and environment
✅ Timeless, polished images
✅ No need to prep your home
✅ Baby-focused (no distractions)
❌ Requires travel to the studio
❌ Less storytelling, more posing
Lifestyle Photography
✅ Tells the story of your family in your own space
✅ Includes siblings and pets in meaningful ways
✅ Relaxed, organic experience
✅ No need to leave the house with a newborn
❌ Lighting depends on your home
❌ Requires tidying and prep
Neither is better — they’re simply different. The choice depends on your priorities. To some parents the idea of prepping the home for a lifestyle session seems like a large mountain to climb, and to other parents the idea of getting the baby and all their things packed into the car, and traveling to unfamiliar place right after giving birth does not not give them warm and fuzzy feelings. Its’s about what feels right to you.
Ask yourself these questions:
Some families even do both — a studio session for baby-focused portraits, and a lifestyle session for storytelling. Together, they create a complete picture of your baby’s first chapter.
In Seattle, one family chose a studio newborn session because they wanted timeless portraits of their daughter. They wanted something to put on announcements to send to all their friends and family.
In Edmonds, another family chose lifestyle newborn photos, complete with their rescue pup! The gallery felt authentic and warm. They wanted something to put in an album for their newborn to look back on, when she was older.
Choosing between studio and lifestyle isn’t just about a single session. It’s about how you want to remember these early days with your baby years from now.
Studio sessions will always give you timeless, classic images of your baby. Lifestyle sessions will always give you personal, storytelling images of your family.
Together, they create a narrative that feels whole — one that shows not just how your baby looked, but how your life felt.
When it comes to choosing between studio and lifestyle photography, there’s no wrong answer. Both are beautiful, and both honor this fleeting chapter of life.
The real question is: what kind of story do you want to tell right now?
