Turning one is a big deal. It’s the moment when your little one is crossing that bridge from babyhood into toddlerhood, and there’s no better way to celebrate than with a photography session that captures both their curiosity and their joy.
For Baby M, his first birthday photography session was a milk bath — and it couldn’t have been a more perfect choice. From the moment he sat in the tub, he was ready to splash, play, and explore. What made this session even more fun was the addition of fresh blueberries and raspberries, which gave him something colorful (and delicious!) to grab for throughout the shoot.
Milk bath sessions are some of my favorites for milestone photography because they’re equal parts playful and beautiful. They let babies engage with water in a safe, contained way while giving parents a gallery that feels timeless and unique. And Baby M’s session? It was everything a first birthday celebration should be: joyful, a little messy, and absolutely unforgettable.
We set up Baby M’s milk bath in my home studio. We kept this setup simple. I used a white tub, warm water mixed with powdered milk for that creamy look, and just a few details to make it special.
For Baby M’s session, those details came in the form of fresh blueberries and raspberries. The deep blues and vibrant reds against the soft white water created a striking contrast. And, as it turned out, they were irresistible to Baby M.
Before we even started taking photos, he reached for the fruit, and inspected the berries before popping them in his mouth. From that moment on, I knew this was going to be less about perfect posing and more about embracing his energy.
Photographing one-year-olds is always an adventure. They’re confident, curious, and brimming with independence. Baby M was no exception.
Instead of sitting still and looking at the camera, he wanted to explore, splash, and snack on berries. At first, it was a challenge. I had to adjust my expectations and remind myself of something I often tell parents: milestone sessions are interactive, not passive. The best photos don’t come from perfectly still poses — they come from capturing the real, unscripted joy of your child being themselves.
So I leaned into the splashes. I photographed his tiny hands smacking the water, the droplets flying midair, the milk swirling with color. I caught the big belly laughs when he realized he could make waves. I focused on his eyes lighting up when he discovered a berry bobbing past his hand.
What we ended up with was a gallery that wasn’t “perfect” in the traditional sense, but perfect in the way that mattered: real, playful, and absolutely reflective of who he was at one.
Milk bath sessions have become one of my most requested milestone add-ons, and it’s easy to see why. They combine the sweetness of bath time with the beauty of natural, creamy tones and simple styling.
Here’s why parents love them:
For first birthdays especially, milk baths are a wonderful alternative (or complement) to cake smashes. They’re less messy, and they create a different kind of visual story that parents treasure just as much.
Even though Baby M’s mom wasn’t in the photos, she played a huge role in the session. I like to tell parents that milestone sessions are interactive. You won’t just sit back and watch, you’ll actually be part of the process, even if you never step in front of the lens.
Throughout the shoot, Mom stood just behind me, clapping, calling his name, and making silly noises to draw out those belly laughs. She passed me berries when I needed them and helped gently redirect him when he got too focused on eating instead of splashing.
Parents often don’t realize how important their involvement is, but children feed off their parents’ energy. When Mom was laughing and cheering, Baby M lit up. That connection — even if it’s not visible in the final images — is what makes the gallery feel so alive.

I’ll be honest — at first, Baby M’s determination to snack on berries instead of engaging with the camera felt like a challenge. But the beauty of milestone photography is that challenges often become the best part of the story.
Instead of fighting his focus, I photographed it. His little fingers delicately holding a blueberry. His expression of triumph after popping one in his mouth. The splash that followed when he clapped his hands in delight.
By letting go of the idea of “perfect cooperation,” I captured his real personality. And those photos? They’re the ones his parents loved most.
Whenever I share a milk bath gallery, I get questions from parents: Is it safe? Is it comfortable for the baby?
The answer is yes — with preparation and attention. Here’s how I ensure every session is safe and enjoyable:
For Baby M, the setup was perfect. He was confident in the tub and clearly comfortable. The result was a session filled with laughter and play, without any stress.
What I’ll remember most about Baby M’s session is his confidence. He wasn’t shy about splashing, playing, or eating berries. He treated the tub like his own little party, and we just happened to be lucky enough to document it.
That’s the beauty of milestone photography: it’s about capturing personality, not perfection. And at one year old, Baby M’s personality came through loud and clear — playful, curious, and full of life.
If you’re considering a milk bath session for your child, here are a few things Baby M’s experience can teach us:
Baby M’s milk bath session was everything a first birthday shoot should be: fun, a little wild, and filled with laughter. From the splash of water to the sweetness of berries, every detail told the story of a little boy stepping into toddlerhood with joy.
For his parents, the gallery now holds more than images — it holds memories of his curiosity, his laughter, and the love that surrounded him on that milestone day.
